Four very different characters, four different approaches to living and one smart building trying its best to accommodate all four habitants. Trouble ensues and along with it new potentials emerge and encourage to rethink what smart living could mean.

"Why should it specifically be me who considers my consumption? The house is supposed to cater to MY needs! Build up energy reserves! Fill up those damn batteries! And most importantly, stop selling my the power I need for my lamps" - Braus

"Unannehmlichkeiten? In dieser gscheiten Stadt?" - Smart

"Inconvenience? In a smart city like this?" - Smart

"Das solln’s gefälligst lassen!"

What happens when we equip our houses to become smart independent agents? Listening to its habitants – can a house develop some form of sentience or intuition? How will the behavior of us residents change as our buildings start to network, listen and interfere with us and one another?

Herr Braus in seinem Lampenfieber
findt er sich gar im Dunkeln wieder?
Wer wird sich in wen verlieben?
Und diese Zahl, die 427.

DING FEST – Drei Räume, drei Feste.

DING lädt zum Bankett, denn am Festtagstisch wird bekanntlicherweise nicht nur gegessen: Generation für Generation bringen wir Meinungen, Gefühle und unser Verständnis von gutem Leben an den Tisch. Design in Gesellschaft präsentiert deshalb drei üppig gedeckte Festtafeln voll Wiener Design, mit Dingen zum Debattieren und Erfreuen, zum liebevollen Streit oder zur Versöhnung, zum Bewundern oder Kaufen, Verschenken oder Behalten.

Präsentiert wurden aktuellste Werke von insgesamt 40 Designer:innen, kuratiert in drei Themenräume die sich mit gängigen Streitthemen auseinandersetzen.

Archaic Alcove: Klein, fein, oder wo nötig auch mal zurückhaltend – wie lebt es sich gut mit der Natur?

Die Objekte dieser Festtafel spielen mit Wissen und Ästhetiken, die bisher als verloren oder sogar überholt galten – eine Renaissance für Objekte und Rituale, die uns wieder mehr mit der Erde verbinden.

Recycle, Rewind, Flash Forward:
‍Alles was sich rund um reduce, reuse, recycle dreht und Objekte von morgen entwirft.

Kitsch Cocktail:
‍Während Zeiten großer Unsicherheit, sehnen wir uns nach Kontrolle über unser Leben: Von 21st century Biedermeier zum Klima-Hedonismus, Ausflüchte machen Spaß, zumindest kurzzeitig. Dieses Festmahl serviert exklusiv Dinge, die glücklich machen, Schönheit in den Alltag bringen und sich selbst nicht zu ernst nehmen.

DING FEST – Three rooms, three parties

DING invites you to a winter season banquet because, as we all know, the festive table is not just for eating: Generation after generation, we bring opinions, feelings and our understanding of the good life to the table. Design in Gesellschaft therefore presents three sumptuously laid banquet tables full of Viennese design, with things to debate and enjoy, to argue lovingly or reconcile, to admire or buy, to give away and to keep.

Archaic Alcove:
‍Small, refined, understated – how to live well with nature? The design object of this category play with knowledge and aesthetics that were considered lost or even outdated – a renaissance for connecting us more with the earth.

Recycle, Rewind, Flash Forward:
Everything that revolves around reduce, reuse, recycle – ideas that discuss the industrial objects and products of tomorrow.

Kitsch Cocktail:
During times of great uncertainty, we crave control over our lives: From 21st century Biedermeier to climate hedonism, escapism is fun, at least for a short time. This feast exclusively serves things that make us happy, bring beauty into everyday life and don't take themselves too seriously while everything else is.

Glaciers that grow.
Not a fiction, but reality. Can we dare to be hopeful?
At the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, Francesca Pellicciotti and her team are investigating glaciers that seem to withstand the pressures of climate change – at least for now.

On the occassion of the first Vienna Climate Biennale, we took the chance to give this field of glacier and hydrosphere research a stage and ask ourselves what it means to measure and study these intangible giants.

With the artists Céline Ducret, Martin Heynen and Patrick Hari, we delve into our complex emotions in times of uncertainty, and tells the story of what it means to measure new realities step by step, as the world shifts beneath our feet.

In doing so, they encounter stories of computer models, remote sensing devices, abstractions, hope, defiance and trust – across multiple research institutions and even continents.

Within scientific practice, hope can be a conflicting feeling.
While it is necessary to anticipate where things might be going, researchers stay careful with crafting predictions, as science is not just a collection of singular facts, but an active process, which adapts and transforms with the very subject of its study.

Specifically in the face of climate change, no day is the same: New data, new insights, new circumstances, new arguments, new narratives, new hopes, new fears. All while the very landscapes we try to understand are transforming and alternating at rapid speeds, shifting beneath our feet as we move.

The exhibition was supported by photographs of Jason Klimatsas and Eduardo Soteras, who accompanied the research group on their travels and many breathtaking moments.

HUMAN. MODEL. WORLD

In many ways, imaging technologies have become an extension of our senses: As a versatile scientific tool, they can extend and shape how we understand ourselves, and the worlds around us.

For the 5th anniversary of the BRIDGE Network, scientists across the member institutes were invited to submit images that provide insights into their practice, their laboratories and their research topics.

The collection mirrors the multitudes of research fields within the network and in many instances blurs the lines between scientific observation, documentation as well as the image becoming the actual center point of a researcher’s inquiry.
From artificial organ-like microstructures used in medical research up to clusters of galaxies at the edge of the universe, and all the proxies in between, the images loosely cluster into the sectors HUMAN / MODEL / WORLD.

Through a play of scales, methods and subjects, the clusters blend into one another as a nod to scientific inquiry expanding continuously and multidirectional.

MAK MENU

the museum as a space of fast culture consumption

Ein Museumsbesuch wie Fastfood-Konsum, eine Installation im MAK: Menü – mitten in der Säulenhalle thronen riesige Versionen bekannter und unbekannter Design-Ikonen auf einem übergroßen Tablett. Die Ausstellung im MAK, Menü ist als solches zusammengestellt,die Objekte bilden eine Kulisse die auf den ersten Blick genau das vermittelt, was sie auf den Zweiten hinterfragt:

Extrem plakativ, wie für Selfies und Likes konzipiert, reduziert sie das Museum scheinbar auf einen Ort des Fast-Culture Konsum und zeigt doch auch was hinter den groß aufgeblasenen Museumsobjekten steckt: Geschichten für die man sich Zeit nimmt und die Lust darauf machen sich mit moderner Museumskultur und ihren Artefakten zu auseinanderzusetzen.

Das große Menü ist nicht allein: Weitere MAK Menüs können als Touren im Museum erlebt werden – jedes verbindet verschiedenste Sammlungsobjekte durch eine unerwartete Querverweise, die Geschichten erzählt, ergänzt und hinterfragt. Muss Kunst also spektakulär sein um zu begeistern? Ist das überhaupt etwas schlechtes?
